Whirlpool is widely considered to be the world’s largest producer of major appliances with products across all major categories, according to the new report Top Global Appliance Companies 2010: Major and Small Appliances, from ApplianceMagazine.com and UBM Canon Data Products Group.



The flagship Whirlpool brand is one of the most recognized in the world and has substantial presence in all its markets: North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. Regional forecast for full-year 2010 industry growth in Europe is expected to be in the 1-3% range compared to the prior expectation of flat demand. Management still expects full-year appliance shipments to increase 10% in Brazil and 8-10% in Asia.



Some major structural changes began in 2010 for Whirlpool in North America. Among other U.S. facility investments, Whirlpool announced in September that it will build a 1 million sq ft manufacturing facility in Cleveland, TN. to produce built-in premium cooking appliances. Whirlpool expects that the new operation will be an energy-efficient, LEED-certified facility to replace the existing, 100-year-old manufacturing plant.



Appliance manufacturers that fared well through the recession, such as Whirlpool, adopted three important strategies – cost reduction, investing in energy-efficient technology, and penetration into developing markets, according to Top Global Appliance Companies 2010.



Another early adopter of industry trends has been LG Electronics. The company achieved a 2009 global sales increase of 12.5%, reaching a company record-level high of $43.4 billion, by investing in overall product innovation, setting the goal of increasing efficiency in major products by 15% from 2007 to 2012, and focusing on sales in overseas markets. One of the company’s innovations in 2010 is its SmartDiagnosis technology for clothes washers and dryers. This system allows customer service representatives to guide consumers to select buttons that trigger a series of diagnostic tones. Quick and efficient troubleshooting over the phone limits service calls and in-home visits. When a service visit is required, the technician can come prepared with the correct parts so that repair can be resolved in one visit.

Improved refrigerator demand has Whirlpool Corp. looking to  hire 100 to 150 more workers at its Middle Amana plant.
The Middle Amana plant is a production facility and design center for bottom-freezer refrigerator models, called bottom mounts.
“The increase is due to both our typical seasonal increase as well as some growth in the bottom-mount business,” Whirlpool Director of External Communications Jill Saletta said in an e-mail.
The hires will be full-time hourly assembly positions, primarily on the second and third shifts, Saletta said.
Whirlpool has already added about 400 workers this year to meet summer demand to cover vacations and ordinary departures of workers, Saletta said. College students are often hired at the plant during the summer to cover vacation schedules.
A job fair was held this morning at the plant at 2800 220th Trail, Amana, to accept applications and perform on-site interviews. The company said applicants may also apply through their nearest Iowa Workforce Development Center.
The positions pay $13.70 per hour, plus shift premiums and bonuses.
Summer is often the peak time for refrigerator demand, as consumers move into new homes that need appliances, and as old refrigerators break down due to higher summer temperatures.

Appliance manufacturer Whirlpool Corp. has announced plans to build a new office campus that will consolidate and expand its current facilities in Benton Harbor, Mich.

(Jul. 28) Appliance manufacturer Whirlpool Corp. has announced plans to build a new office campus that will consolidate and expand its current facilities in Benton Harbor, Mich.
Whirlpool currently operates 15 facilities on owned or leased property, which will be consolidated into three centralized campuses over the next five years. The three campuses will include the existing Benton Harbor Administrative Center and St. Joseph Technology Center locations, and a new three-building campus to be located on Main Street, between River Street and Riverview Drive, in downtown Benton Harbor.
In addition to these three campuses, the company plans to retain its Hilltop Drive South offices in St. Joseph and the Harbor Town offices in Benton Harbor.
"With more than 4,000 individuals in our current facilities, we have simply outgrown our current space,” said Jeff Fettig, Whirlpool’s chairman and CEO, in a prepared statement. “This initiative is a good business decision, as the new campus and related changes are expected to increase productivity and energy efficiency, and reduce operating costs." The new buildings, which must still gain local and state approval, will be highly energy efficient and built to achieve Gold LEED certification, according to Whirlpool.
Meanwhile, Whirlpool's plant in Evansville, Ind., closed for good in June, almost a year after the company announced its intention to shut it down. A Whirlpool design center will remain in Evansville and employ about 300 people. The plant employed more than 1,100 workers a year ago.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
Name of Product: Dishwashers
Units: About 1.7 million in the United States
Manufacturer: Maytag Corp. of Newton, Iowa or Maytag Corp. of Benton Harbor, Mich.
Hazard: An electrical failure in the dishwasher’s heating element can pose a serious fire hazard.
Incidents/Injuries: Maytag has received 12 reports of dishwasher heating element failures that resulted in fires and dishwasher damage, including one report of extensive kitchen damage from a fire. No injuries have been reported.
Description: The recall includes Maytag®, Amana®, Jenn-Air®, Admiral®, Magic Chef®, Performa by Maytag® and Crosley® brand dishwashers with plastic tubs and certain serial numbers. The affected dishwashers were manufactured with black, bisque, white, silver and stainless steel front panels. The brand name is printed on the front of the dishwasher. The model and serial numbers are printed on a label located inside the plastic tub on a tag near the left side of the door opening. Serial numbers will start or end with one of the following sequences.

If the dishwasher is included in the recall, consumers can either schedule a free in-home repair or receive a rebate following the purchase of certain new Maytag brand stainless-steel tub dishwashers. The rebate is $150 if the consumer purchases new dishwasher models MDB7759, MDB7609 or MDBH979; or $250 if the consumer purchases new dishwasher models MDB8959, MDB8859, MDB7809 or MDB7709. Consumers should not return the recalled dishwashers to the retailer where purchased as retailers are not prepared to take the units back.

Distributor: McDonald's Corp., Oakbrook, Ill.
Hazard: The designs on the glasses contain cadmium. Long term exposure to cadmium can cause adverse health effects.
Incidents/Injuries: None reported.
Description: The "Shrek Forever After 3D" collectable drinking glass are 16 ounce glasses that came in four designs, Shrek, Fiona, Puss n' Boots, and Donkey.
Sold exclusively at: McDonald's restaurants nationwide from May 2010 into June 2010 for about $2.
Manufactured in: United States
Remedy: McDonald's is asking consumers to immediately stop using the glasses out of an abundance of caution and return the glasses to any McDonald's for a refund of $3 each.

Hazard: A wire can break in the machine and make contact with a metal part on the washtub while the machine is operating, posing fire and shock hazards to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: GE is aware of seven incidents in which flames escaped the units and caused minor smoke damage. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves GE front-load washing machines without auxiliary water heating. Model and serial numbers are listed in the chart below. Recalled washing machines were manufactured between December 2006 and February 2010. The model and serial numbers are located on the bottom right side and on the bottom door frame of the washers.

At tax time, many consumers are cashing in on tax credits and rebates that come from making their homes more energy-efficient. One key tactic: Buy an appliance approved by the government's Energy Star program. But there is evidence that products with the Energy Star seal don't always live up to their billing.

"We find that not all of the products are as efficient as they claim to be," says Celia Kuperszmid-Lehrman, deputy home editor for Consumer Reports.

The tax benefits are aimed at encouraging homeowners to replace outdated and energy-hungry furnaces and appliances. But Kuperszmid-Lehrman tells NPR's Steve Inskeep that not all of the newer models skimp on power consumption.

"We found, particularly, problems with refrigerators," she says of tests Consumer Reports conducted on certified products.

The magazine reported that two of the refrigerators it tested used about 50 percent more energy than the numbers on their labels. Another pair used 39 percent more and 33 percent more.

Part of the problem, Kuperszmid-Lehrman says, is that the Energy Star program is self-certifying — meaning the government doesn't independently confirm the data it gets from manufacturers.

There are some serious problems ... because you do have manufacturers self-certifying — and you don't have anyone checking on them.

"They're the ones that say, 'Yes, my product is energy-efficient,' " she says. "And for the most part, that's working very well, but there are some serious problems with that, because you do have manufacturers self-certifying — and you don't have anyone checking on them."

In a recent test by the Government Accountability Office, the agency submitted 20 completely bogus products for Energy Star certification. Of the 20 applications, 15 were approved — including one for a gasoline-powered alarm clock.

"One of the things that I found very disturbing about the report, in addition to the bogus products that got the Energy Star" certification, says Kuperszmid-Lehrman, "was how quickly they got the Energy Star — how quickly those products became listed on the Department of Energy's Web site.

"So that if a consumer was looking for a product, they would think that that product was more efficient."

The Department of Energy has said it will soon change the system to include third-party verification.

Kuperszmid-Lehrman says that's a good start — but she also thinks the Energy Star testing system needs to be retooled.

"Many of the tests themselves are woefully out of date, and they don't necessarily replicate the experience that the consumer's going to have in the home," she says.

Still, Kuperszmid-Lehrman doesn't think that people shopping for energy efficiency — and a tax break —- should ignore the Energy Star program altogether.

"I think it's a good relative rating," she says. "But there are instances like I've mentioned with refrigerators, with freezers, that the numbers are not quite what they seem to be."

Common Questions About Dryers

-How long is a normal time for clothes to dry?
The typical dryer should dry a medium to large size load of laundry in fourty five minutes. If your dryer is taking longer than that or two cycles then you need to check your vent to see if it is clogged. If your vent system is not clogged you might have another issue like a inner part going out. If so, call us.

-How often should I clean the lint filter? ALWAYS clean your filter out with Every Single Load change. Lent can be a fire hazard!

-What type of vent should I have? Is the white vinyl tubing OK?
This is an important question! Building codes now require you to use only metal ducting. White vinyl ducting is out! The vinyl tends to collect lint which ends up being a fire hazard and the metal ducting seems to let the lent pass through the ducting more smoothly. NEVER use anything but metal ducting.

-Should I oil the motor or rollers? No.
You should never have to oil any inner parts of a clothes dryer. If you begin to hear squeaks or rubbing sounds then you should call us. We can walk you through what your problem may be.

-Is a gas dryer cheaper to run than an electric dryer?
Yes, on average it is cheaper to run a gas dryer versus an electric dryer. When purchasing your dryer ask the salesperson to show you their Energy Star ratings.

-Do dryer softener sheets hurt the dryer?
This is a tricky question. The sheet itself does not harm the dryer although the residue and chemicals within the sheet can gunk up your lint filter as well as some of the inner mechanisms. Try and clean your lint filter screen often. We do not recommend using dryer sheets in our own dryers or our customers. In our opinion the chemicals on the sheets can rust parts as well. So we do not personally endorse them. This is a call each individual must make. The main thing is to clean your lint filter OFTEN. Keep the air flowing at all times.

-Is it important for my dryer to be level?
It is imperative to level your appliances. If the appliance is not level over time the screws and inner parts can become out of line because they are made to work correctly and stay in alighnment with no jostling. If the appliance is not level they are more likely to be able to work themselves loose or cause other damage. Also, dryers' drums move at high rates of speed. So, this is imperative that a dryer be level. Unlevel dryers can cause damage to your flooring also! So be sure your dryers are level.

Name of Product: Thermador® Built-In Ovens

Units: About 37,000 (42,000 built-in ovens were previously recalled in June 2007)

Manufacturer: BSH Home Appliances Corp., of Huntington Beach, Calif.

Hazard: The ovens can have gaps in the insulation where overheating can occur and when used in the self-cleaning mode it can cause nearby cabinets to catch fire. This poses a fire hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: BSH Home Appliances has received three additional reports of incidents, including two that resulted in fires that damaged surrounding cabinets. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recall involves Thermador Brand built-in double ovens with model numbers C272B, C302B, SEC272, SEC302, SECD272 and SECD302 and serial numbers between FD8403 through FD8701. Model and serial numbers are located on the underside of the control panel.

Sold at: Appliance and specialty stores nationwide from June 2004 through July 2007 for between $3,000 and $4,400.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the oven’s self-cleaning mode and contact the firm to schedule an inspection and free repair, if necessary.

Manufacturer: Electrolux Home Products Inc., of Augusta, Ga.

Hazard: An incorrect part allows more fuel to pass to the range’s oven than can be burned efficiently, causing incomplete combustion and the release of carbon monoxide. This poses a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Electrolux has received four reports of incidents involving carbon monoxide being released from the recalled gas range. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The following Electrolux ICON and Kenmore PRO 30” free-standing gas range model and serial numbers are included in this recall. For Electrolux ICON, the model and serial numbers are located on the back of the range. What I want in a Repair Man

Good morning, or afternoon, folks! I was recently putting together a list of what we want when we hire our new Journeyman Technician. This made me think about the other side of the fence... the one we serve, the layperson. We hold the reigns and it is easy to forget to do this. What would I want in a Repair Man??? What do our customers want in a Repair Man?
So I thought I would list just what I would want in a Repair Man....

-I want someone who listens, really listens to me the customer and what the appliance is doing. Not someone who half listens and just gets to work. Many times the tech can miss something because they didn't listen.
-I would want someone who loves their job and doesn't look at it like a job.
-Someone who was respectful and had a good background, definitely not a prior burglar.
-Someone who respect their elders... seems to me someone like this would treat anyone kindly.
-Someone who is knowledgable about what they do and willing to admit when they don't know what they are doing.
-Take that one step further... someone who has the resources to figure out what else needs to be done or who to ask the questions to get the information.
-Someone willing to get further training where needed.
-Someone who likes to go the extra mile, say I have something I need lifted that is too heavy for me. So what if it takes the guy a few extra minutes.
-A technician who is thorough through and through.
-One who is interested in my and my family's safety. Maybe he could give me tidbit information.
-I could go on and on and on!!!!

So below is my definition of the requirements in whom we want to hire for our journeyman position. This position is a grow with the company position.... for someone with insight and willingness to grow and bloom. Job Description - Appliance Repair and Installation Technician Trainee
"This position is a trainee position to become a repair technician responsible for the repair of appliances in the customer’s home.
Products repaired include the following home appliances: Washers & Dryers, Gas & Electric Stoves, Microwave Ovens, Dishwashers, Trash Compactors, Garbage Disposers, Refrigeration, and other major home appliances.
This position provides timely and quality repairs of customers’ products while maintaining high customer service. The technician is the first line contact with the customer and therefore represents our company.
Must be willing to train to troubleshoot, repair, install, and test the products."

Qualifications:
*Must demonstrate prior work and or school experience to prove ability to fulfill job requirements. Some prior experience is acceptable. We will train the right individual.
*Computer literate, Clean Driving Record a must. High School or Equivalent. *Technical School and EPA certification a Plus.
*Work as a dedicated team member to ensure fast, flexible and expert service to every customer.
*Demonstrate a sense of urgency to meet customer time commitments-Punctuality
*Successfully complete all training elements in satisfactory time frames and successfully PASS necessary state testing. Will Not be promoted to Full Service Technician until Lead Technician deems fit and ready to perform duties as well as fully complete all "training quadrants".
*Be able to lift 70 + pounds on a continuous basis.
*Be computer literate and able to learn computer programs of various natures.
*Provide knowledgeable and courteous repair service. Be able to communicate satisfactorily with both customers and company team members.
Continuously look for methods to improve business performance and enhance the customer experience.
*Maintain truck stock inventory within the prescribed company guidelines and standards. Once being promoted to Full Technician you will man your own truck but as a trainee you will ride along with another Full Technician.
*Follow the truck maintenance schedule and keep a clean, organized truck
*Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
*Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned- Additionally, technician trainee will provide inventory backup or office work when calls are not scheduled, not in training, or not doing field work. Trainee positions are to be aware watch and learn and to assist whenever possible in your hands-on learning.
*Be willing to sign an employment contract detailing job description of the position being offered and accepted; The compensation that will be paid; Whether the employment is for a set length of time or at will; Specifics regarding vacation time and sick leave and whether such time accrues from year to year; And the responsibilities of both parties with regards to the work to be done and the work environment.

Trainees receive a hourly wage in relation to field trainee wages. Raises are given in relation to performance and or promotions.

Dishwasher Cleaning Quickly and Easily
Washing your dishwasher? Doesn't that sound kind of like overkill? After all, doesn't the dishwasher wash itself every time you run a load of dirty dishes?
As the old song says, "It ain't necessarily so!" Dishwashers need regular routine cleaning just like every large, frequently used appliance in your home.
We don't always take the time to scrape and rinse food from plates and bowls before putting them into the dishwasher. Tiny bits of food, grease and soap scum cling together and are deposited in corners of the dishwasher and in crevices around the door. After a time, they can accumulate significantly and become a problem with appearance and odor. This is really quite logical when you think about it. Notwithstanding the fact that dishwasher soaps have some germ killing properties along with degreasers, any environment which is frequently warm, moist and dark is a breeding ground for many forms of bacteria.
A routine dishwasher cleaning is a good habit and should be included with the routine deep cleaning of your home. After you get the hang of it, you can clean your dishwasher quickly and easily.

How to Clean Your Dishwasher And Remove Odor
Using a small brush (old toothbrushes work well) dipped in hot soapy water, go around the door of the dishwasher taking care to get into the grooves and crevices of the rubber seal. Most likely, you'll be surprised at the debris that has built up, especially at the bottom of the door and around the hinges on the side.
Scrub well. You may need to use a soft abrasive cleanser, such as Soft Scrub® to remove the dried and baked on grime.
Using a household sponge dipped in hot soapy water, wipe off the dirt and grime that you stirred up with the brush. Go over the inside of the door and scrub any obvious areas inside the dishwasher that may have stuck-on food, such as out of reach corners.
Pull the bottom rack out and examine the drain area. Wipe around it to be sure there are no hard chunks that can plug the drain, cause damage to the pump or scratch dishes. You'd be surprised at what dishwasher repairmen find - bones, crab shells, chips of glass, and even small pieces of gravel!
Using a clean wet sponge or dishrag, wipe the cleaning solution from the gasket and the door.
Then place a dishwasher-safe cup filled with plain white vinegar on the top rack of the dishwasher. Using the hottest water available, run the dishwasher through a cycle - except for the cup of vinegar, the dishwasher needs to be empty.
The vinegar will help to wash away the loose, greasy grime, sanitizes, and helps remove the musty odor.
If you don't have any white vinegar, you may substitute a packet of unsweetened lemonade mix in the soap cup. Don't experiment with other flavors as they may stain the inside of your dishwasher.
Baking soda is also effective at freshening and brightening your dishwasher. Just sprinkle a cupful around the bottom of the tub and run it through a short but complete cycle using the hottest water. Baking soda is also helpful in removing stains.

Hard Water, Rust, Iron and Mineral Stains in Your Dishwasher
Imagine my disappointment when, after moving into a brand new home with brand new appliances, I noticed a gradual dulling of the inside of my dishwasher (and clothes washer) that looked suspiciously like rust. It was rust! The water from our private well contains some minerals, including iron, which were not removed by a filtration system - we didn't have one. I tried several commercial preparations from home department stores that claimed to effectively remove mineral deposits and stains but they can be pretty toxic and great care must be given in using and storing such products. Although it was a rather expensive fix, I finally invested in a water purification and filtration system for my home. Good move on my part and I have never regretted the expenditure. My tap water is fresh, clean and odor free; the insides of my dishwasher and clothes washer are sparkling again. My white clothing, sheets, wash cloths and bath towels do not have the tell-tale stains, and there are no reddish-brown drips on my sinks!
If you can't stop the mineral or rust stains at the source (replacing rusty pipes, while advisable, may be out of your control), check the laundry detergent section of your large grocery store or home improvement store for products that remove rust stains from clothing or appliances. Place the product into the soap dispenser cup on your dishwasher and also sprinkle some freely on the bottom of the dishwasher. Make sure your dishwasher does not have any dishes in it when you run it through this complete cleaning cycle.

Dishwashing Tips
It is probably not necessary to pre-wash your dishes like some people do, but it is important to scrape off leftover food from plates and bowls. Rinse and then load into the dishwasher.
Use common sense when loading your dishes. Put table ware in the appropriate compartment; placing sharp knives with their tips down.
Don't jam dishes in - give adequate space between plates and bowls to allow the water to circulate freely; likewise, be careful that a large bowl or lid does not block the water spray from reaching the inside of other dishes and drink ware.
Use the hottest water available for washing your dishes in the dish washer. This is necessary for dried-on food removal, for properly melting the dishwashing detergent you use, and for sanitation.
Major detergent and dishwasher manufacturers recommend a water temperature of at least 130° to work effectively.
Many areas have fairly hard water which affects the cleaning properties of detergents. For that reason, we recommend filling both detergent cups and using a rinsing agent, as well.

Gel Detergents
Mrs. Clean, Inc., does not recommend gel detergents! There are several reasons why.
Gels typically contain bleach - primarily chlorine bleach - which causes rubber seals to break down and leak.
Gels often leave a whitish or cloudy film on glassware.
Gels tend to stick to the inside surface of the dishwasher, never really being rinsed off.
Gels are intentionally thick so that they stick inside the soap cup and don't run immediately into the bottom of the dishwasher. Therefore, they leave a sticky residue inside the soap dispenser, actually cause it to clog and not open during the timed sequence.
Gels are not effective in hard water - and almost always leave spots.

REFRIGERATOR/ FREEZER

  • Clean condenser.
  • Check and properly adjust thermostat and air dampers.
  • Check automatic defrost cycle.
  • Check door seals for air leaks.
  • Clean defrost evaporation pan.
  • Check defrost drain for blockage and leaks.
  • Level cabinet.
  • Check ice dispenser (if applicable) for proper operation.
  • Check water dispenser (if applicable) for proper water flow.
  • Inspect electrical system.


DISHWASHER

  • Check pump and motor shaft for leaks.
  • Clean pump and spray arms.
  • Check water distribution.
  • Check and clean dispenser operation.
  • Check heating element.
  • Ensure correct amount of water enters the dishwasher.
  • Check door gasket to prevent leaks.
  • Level dishwasher as needed.
